This plant was inaugurated in three stages: 1964, 1972 and 1984. It was decommissioned in February 1998 because of the serious damage caused by a mudslide, and only resumed operations in 2002.
The work of expanding the capacity of the plant should go into commercial operation in January 2012 and will add 71 MW to Machupicchu.
The decrease in the flow and modification of physical and biological parameters of the river resulted in alteration of the habitat of protected species such as the otter (Lutra longicaudis).
