General characteristics:

The São Manuel dam is part of the Teles Pires Hydroelectric Complex, also composed by five other hydroelectric projects: Teles Pires (1820 MW), Sinop (461 MW), Colíder (342 MW), Foz do Apiacás (275 MW) and Magessi (53 MW).

Municipalities affected:

Paranaíta (MT) and Jacareanga (PA). 

Companies:

Empresa de Pesquisa Energética (EPE) is an agency of Brazil's Ministry of Mines and Energy.

A consortium of EDP (66.6%) and Furnas (33.3%) won the project auction in December 2013. In February 2014, EDP sold half of its share to CWEI, an investment arm of China Three Gorges Corporation. As a result, CWEI retains 33.3% share of the São Manoel Dam.

Timeline:

Federal Government previews that the dam will start operation in 2015.

  • Apiaká (Kayabi-Apiaká Indigenous Land).

* Empresa de Pesquisa Energética (EPE) promotes studies to identify impacts involving the above mentioned communities.    

Protection areas affected:

Presence of Environmental Protection Corridors (region included in the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Brazilian Biological Diversity  Program - Probio).

Studies:

Due to the late submission of data and reports, Andrade Gutierrez's authorization to conduct the feasibility study was changed to inactive status.
